Va-Va-Va-Video!

I have a love-hate relationship with video marketing.

Maybe it’s because video is not my favorite way of consuming information – except for yoga on YouTube.  I don’t love it when people email or text me videos.

I’d rather read an article or listen to a podcast.  But shocker (!), it’s not all about what I like.  It’s about what my audience likes.

It’s surprising how much people enjoy the little nonsense videos in my e-newsletters.  A colleague once told me he sends them to his father.  So nice to feel a part of their family connection.

And so, I plug along with the mini-movies.  Like blog writing, I have come up with some hacks to save time and brain damage on video recording.  Maybe these will work for you.

  1. First, I record on Zoom.  Not fancy, but free and always available.

  2. I time the video recording for when I am already dressed up for something else.  For me that means carving out a 15-minute time slot after a client Zoom or networking event where I’m in full makeup and business clothes.

  3. Record all the videos at once.  Change out your jacket and accessories between takes so there is variety in the visuals.

  4. Make it short – 2 minutes maximum.

  5. Unless you REALLY screw it up, just go with whatever you say on the first take.  A little stumble here and there makes you human.

  6. Record a video that relates to the blog you wrote for that week’s newsletter.  Give a little extra info on that topic, a humorous story, or an extra personal opinion on that week’s content.

Like anything you feel weird about doing, with practice, recording video messages gets better.  It’s an easy way for your clients and future clients to feel like they know and trust you.  And refer you.  And continue doing business with you.  Isn’t that the whole point?
